State Senator Elder Vogel, Jr.
2012 Green Advocate Award

The Green Industry Advocate Award is awarded to State Senator Elder Vogel, the chairman of the senate agriculture and rural affairs committee. The Green Industry Advocate Award is PLNA’s highest honor for a public servant or policymaker whose efforts have significantly benefited Pennsylvania’s green industry.
A dairy farmer by profession, Senator Vogel has been very open to learning about the green industry and listening to our concerns. Among the ways he has assisted PLNA, he has been instrumental in helping us to make the case to other legislators that legislation regulating the application of turf grass fertilizer be based on science. Early drafts of this bill, in fact, were not based on the best available scientific evidence and would have resulted in millions of dollars in compliance costs to our industry with no environmental benefit. With Senator Vogel’s backing, PLNA was able negotiate changes in the bill that reflected the most recent scientific evidence, potentially saving our industry millions in needless compliance costs
