Title: Health Effects of Pesticides: Get the Facts and Put Them to Use!
Speakers: Lee Stivers and Emelie Swackhamer, Penn State Extension Educators

This presentation will cover how to access comprehensive, unbiased information about the acute and chronic health effects of specific pesticides using the National Pesticide Information Center website. Several pesticides commonly used in the green industry will be presented as examples for how to access information through NPIC fact sheets, and how to apply that information when making decisions about pesticide applications. We will also point out some other useful aspects of the NPIC website, such as using it to report bee incidents anonymously. Finally, we will present an overview of first aid in pesticide application situations, including an interactive activity on identifying symptoms of acute pesticide exposure.

Title: What’s Eating My Leaves?
Speaker: Timothy Abbey, Penn State Extension Educator

Description for PDA: Often we see the damage of insect pests on herbaceous and woody plants but do not the pest that caused the damage. In this presentation, participants will learn the different feeding styles of insect pests including chewing (notch feeders, defoliators, skeletonizers, borers and leafminers) and piercing-sucking insects. They will learn to use the signs of insect feeding and the insects themselves to identify the pests and learn strategies for management of the pests.
