Join the Ecological Landscape Alliance for an in depth look into the Plum and Walnut Street vegetated stormwater system in the heart of urban Lancaster. A 2014 installed retrofit, we will discuss the initial challenges of this urban green infrastructure and analyze how our team solved them, resulting in a highly functional, aesthetic, and successful set of rain garden systems.

The project features rain gardens, a new porous patio for the Lancaster Brewing Company, a public art project, and manages 1.7 million gallons or stormwater annually. The rain gardens are designed with native shrubs, perennials, ornamental grasses, new tree species, and the patio is made of permeable pavers. These components allow stormwater to soak into the ground and be treated by the natural filtration and microbial action within the sub-soils.

The project was also the winner of the Chesapeake Stormwater Network’s Best Urban BMP in the Bay Awards (BUBBAs) recognizing the best urban stormwater management practices that have been installed in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
