Green Infrastructure is an approach to solving the stormwater problems of urban areas that also provides sustainable community benefits ranging from beautification, health and safety. Green infrastructure manages stormwater through cost effective systems designed and engineered to mimic natural hydrologic functions including infiltration, retention and evapotranspiration. For the small urban communities within Blair County, Pennsylvania, green infrastructure practices such as rain gardens, porous pavement and rainwater harvesting can provide cost effective, long-lasting solutions for stormwater management that can be incorporated into each community’s municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4) and Chesapeake Bay pollution load reduction strategies.
