Designing With Natives: Backyard Conservation Design Basic Training

Kutztown University, 202 Academic Forum, May 14 10:00am-3:00 pm Cost: $60

Every homeowner, gardener, teacher or landowner interested in helping the environment can benefit from an all-day training on restoring ecology to backyards. Backyard Conservation Design is an environmentally-sensitive, low-impact and restorative approach to backyard and open space design using native plants. John Rogers, of Keystone Conservation Trust, will show you how to create great habitat, save money, limit runoff and create curb appeal and a beautiful backyard. Using a companion CD, Designing With Natives, begin your own design process to implement real conservation and change. Discover how to create seasonal curb appeal with native plants and save money with sustainable landscaping. A site visit with a full assessment demonstration and practice is included on a day to be determined by the class.
A workbook is provided to help you design your yard. It contains steps, charts of plant bloom times and tolerances and great stewardship ideas. The class is $60, and provides materials, lunch and a CD of John’s book, Designing With Natives. Pre-register at Shop Basic Training or pay at the door.
"In Designing With Natives, John Rogers has compiled the most comprehensive guide to sustainable landscaping I have seen to date. He could just as easily have called it "Managing Water with Natives," "Sequestering Carbon with Natives," "Conserving Biodiversity with Natives," or "Saving Energy with Natives," since his new book discusses all of these ecosystem services and more. Even a quick read will convince you that our properties and neighborhoods are more than just places to live. They provide ideal opportunities to encourage the essential earth functions that support us. Designing With Natives will be a useful and timely reference for years to come." Doug Tallamy

John Rogers is an environmental consultant, award winning planner, researcher, teacher and author. For 40 years, John worked as an environmental consultant on environmental science and policy issues across the United States and Canada. Trained as a plant ecologist, planner and businessman, John brings an integrated perspective to backyard conservation.

This class is eligible for 5 PCH CEUs.
