HARLEYSVILLE - We learned from Herb's son, Mickey, that Herb passed away this past December 22 at his home in Schwenksville, Pa. at the age of 91. Herb was president of PLNA in 1983 (picture left), received the Hall of Fame Award in 1993 and the and the Mummert Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. Herb was beloved husband to Lorainne , father of Jeffrey, Harris (Mickey), and Judy, grandfather and great grandfather.
Born in Berlin, Germany he studied horticulture in Hanover, Germany until emigrating to the U. S. in 1939 and found work in greenhouse operations in N. Y. and then Philadelphia. Becoming a U. S. citizen in 1943, Herb enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served in the Philippines as a Sea Bee until his honorable discharge in 1946. In July, 1946 he married Lorainne Eisenstaedt and moved from Philadelphia to Eureka in Bucks County, and then to Harleysville in Montgomery County with his County Line Landscape Nursery. Established in 1951, the business is thriving today at the same location. The landscape/nursery/garden center is now run by his son, Mickey and his family in its 3rd generation.
Herb also had been active at Temple University and Delaware Valley College, as well as the Pa. Horticultural Society and winning numerous awards at the Philadelphia Flower Show, and later becoming a judge for the Show.
Herb is remembered by his colleagues as a man of strong opinions and tenacious resolve. His persistence led to the compilation and writing of PLNA's history on the occasion of the Association's one hundredth anniversary. That history was published and made available to all members at the Centennial Clelebration in State College in February of 2004.
Herb’s family is particularly proud that he encouraged so many young people to choose horticulture as a career and helped a wide audience to enjoy its beauty.
