WASHINGTON, D.C. - For those monitoring the immigration reform debate in Congress, the latest news is a mix of good and bad. Among the good news -- last week, 110 conservative economists endorsed immigration reform.
As for the bad news: NumbersUSA, the nation’s leading anti-immigration grassroots organization, has purchased nearly half a million dollars in television ads covering 11 states. The opposition ads are scheduled to run May 25 to June 2 in the target states of Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nevada, North Carolina, South Carolina, Utah and Missouri.
The mixed news underscores the uncertain nature of the quest for reform. While there is more momentum than at any point over the last 7 years, an organized and well-funded opposition will do everything it can to derail the effort. Nothing can be taken for granted, and those who support reform must do their part now.
