HARRISBURG - According to House and Senate Agriculture
Committee staff, bills (SB 638 and HB 1439) assuring that high tunnels (hoop houses) will not be
subject to real estate taxes may pass before Thanksgiving.
As the bills were moving in June of this year, differences
in wording of House and Senate versions of the bills stopped their progress.
Over the past several weeks, those differences have been ironed out, clearing the
way for final action.
Only two counties in Pennsylvania are currently attempting
to tax high tunnels, so the measures won't have an impact on the current tax
bases of counties. The bills are needed more to clarify existing law and assure
that high tunnels remain exempt from taxation.
