In November, the PLNA membership was called upon to elect two new representatives for the Board of Directors. The votes have been tallied and Brad Groff of River Valley Landscapes and Carrie Wiles of North Creek Nurseries have won the seats. Brad and Carrie will serve 3-year terms effective January 1, 2014.

Brad Groff is the co-owner of River Valley Landscapes and Pools of Wrightsville, PA, which Brad and co-owner Doug Caldwell started during the spring break of their senior year at Delaware Valley College in 1991. River Valley has award-winning projects published nationally, regionally, and locally. Although Brad is proud of all these accomplishments, he is most proud of developing a team and processes that allows him to help oversee a $4 million business and still be home by 5:00pm. Most recently Brad decided to share his most valuable management tool. He co-founded CAPAX which produces "Schedule 2 Win” software. This software is designed to provide companies of any size a clearer understanding of their financial picture by allowing companies to see tomorrow’s profits today. Brad feels he can serve mostly in areas of entrepreneurship, marketing new ideas and the ability to use the latest technology to one’s advantage.

Carrie Wiles currently serves as the Marketing Director at North Creek Nurseries, a propagation nursery that specializes in growing starter plants for the wholesale trade and landscape market. While studying Ornamental Horticulture and Business/Marketing at The Pennsylvania State University, Carrie was the Research Assistant under Dr. David Beattie where she developed written and visual representations of semester contributions to the Penn State Center for Green Roof Research. Upon graduation Carrie transitioned into a yearlong appointment with the Continuing Education department at Longwood Gardens. She then served as Assistant Landscape Manager and Landscape Interpretation Specialist at The Delaware Center for Horticulture (TheDCH), a non-profit community resource organization dedicated to promoting knowledge and appreciation of gardening, horticulture, and conservation. In 2006 Carrie saw an opportunity to develop her creative side and partnered with a small organic potting soil start up as a freelance graphic artist. For the past five years Carrie has been responsible for the horticultural and ecological marketing arms of North Creek Nurseries. In 2011 North Creek became a Sustainable SITES compliant nursery. Carrie currently serves on the Plant Selection Committee for the Rare Plant Auction and volunteers regularly for The DCH. As a board member, Carrie plans to bring a crisp, energetic perspective and an assortment of skills, including project management & execution, expertise in marketing & technology and fiduciary accountability.

In addition, the membership was asked to elect a new representative for the Nominating Committee, the group that screens nominees for upcoming ballots. The newest member of the Committee will be Jim MacKenzie of Octoraro Native Plant Nursery.

Jim MacKenzie graduated in 1986 from Penn State University with a BS in Landscape Architecture. He worked subsequently in the field and related professions in Philadelphia and Warren, Pennsylvania and Driggs, Idaho until 1993. In 1994 he became co-owner and President of Octoraro Native Plant Nursery. Jim manages the day-to-day and financial operations, customer support, marketing and sales. Having served over 12 years on the PLNA BOD, Jim says he is reminded again and again how the dedication of a talented and competent staff along with a core of volunteers helps drive this association. "This is PLNA’s legacy, strong industry leaders working together to promote the industry and work constructively together to meet the changing needs of the membership.” His goal on the nominations committee is to actively solicit and recruit the next generation of new leaders for PLNA to continue this tradition.
