ERIE – PLNA members met with Congressman Glenn Thompson (R-Centre) in July to urge him to press U.S. House Republican leadership to move immigration reform forward.
Thompson represents Pennsylvania’s 5th Congressional district, the largest geographic Congressional district in Pennsylvania. The 5th stretches from Centre County to Erie County and from the New York border down to Interstate 80. Thompson is Pennsylvania’s only representative on the House Agriculture Committee.
The meeting was hosted by Dan Dahlkemper of Dahlkemper Landscape Architects and Contractors in Erie. Hagan Hetz of Fairview Evergreen Nurseries in Fairview also attended along with Gregg Robertson, PLNA’s government relations consultant.
Thompson was only able to confirm that he did not anticipate any movement on immigration reform by the House this year, except for a small chance that something could move during the lame duck session after the fall election. (See PLNA e-News July 2014.)
Both Dahlkemper and Hetz urged Thompson to continue working to move a bill on immigration reform in the House. The longer the current broken system continues, the more jeopardy employers face as they try to stay within the law and fulfill their workforce needs.
PLNA and other immigration reform advocates are continuing to meet with their Congressional representatives throughout the summer and fall to urge them to move a reform bill.
