HARRISBURG - With the new 199th General Assembly sworn in on January 6, new committee assignments will mean new faces for PLNA to get to know, especially in the House. Of key interest to PLNA are the Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the Environmental Resources and Energy Committees.
House Environmental Resources and Energy
Rep. John Maher (R – Allegheny), the chair of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee for the past four years, has moved over to chair of the Environmental Resources and Energy Committee. Maher, a strong supporter of PLNA and the green industry, received PLNA’s Green Industry Advocate award in 2014.
In a conversation with Gregg Robertson, PLNA’s government relations consultant, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show PA Preferred reception, Maher said that he is staying on the Ag Committee as a member and will continue to support PLNA’s causes from his position on the Environmental Resource Committee.
Greg Vitali (D-Montgomery) is the minority chair of the committee.
House Agriculture and Rural Affairs
Taking Maher’s place as chair on the House Ag Committee is Rep. Martin Causer (R–Bradford). Causer’s district is along the New York–Pennsylvania border and includes part of the Allegheny National Forest and several state forests. His legislative interests, not surprisingly, revolve around public lands and forestry issues. He is also a member of the Environmental Resources committee.
John Sabatina (D-Philadelphia) has been named minority chair of the committee.
House Game and Fisheries
One additional new committee chair of interest to PLNA is Rep. Keith Gillespie (R-York) of the House Game and Fisheries Committee. In accepting his new chair responsibilities Gillespie said his priority is to “take steps to combat invasive species.” PLNA will be following up with Rep. Gillespie to find out more about his legislative plans for invasive species.
In the Senate, there was no change in the chairs of Ag and Rural Affairs and the Environmental Resources and Energy Committees. Senator Elder Vogel (R-Beaver) remains at the helm of the Ag Committee with Senator Judy Schwank (D-Berks) as the minority chair. Senator Gene Yaw (R-Lycoming) continues as chair of Environmental Resources and Senator John Yudichak (D-Luzerne) as minority chair.
