BROWNSVILLE, TX – A federal district court judge in Texas halted the Obama Administration’s plan to defer deportation of as many as five million undocumented immigrants (See PLNA e-News November 25, 2014). The decision came down days before the program was to begin accepting applications.
The lawsuit that overturned the deferred action plan was brought by the state of Texas and twenty-five other states which alleged that the program would subject the states to increased burdens from undocumented immigrants.
The Obama Administration has vowed to appeal the district court decision and has petitioned the court for a stay while the issue is being appealed so that the program could continue. If a stay is not granted, the program cannot go forward while the case makes its way, ultimately, to the U.S. Supreme Court.
