2013 Fredrick J. Mummert
Distinguished Service Award
The Fredrick J. Mummert Award is awarded to Tom McMeekin of McMeekin Nurseries near Pittsburgh, PA. Although now retired, McMeekin has been active in PLNA throughout his career. He held many chapter positions in the southwest chapter of PLNA and served several terms on the board of directors. In 1996, he received the PLNA Hall of Fame Award.
McMeekin's proudest achievement for PLNA was when he was chairman of the Membership Committee in the 1980's when PLNA had its highest number of members. Whenver he called on his customers, he was also making a call for membership in the PLNA as well.
McMeekin was a voice in representing the nursery segment of Pennsylvania's green industry. He was politically active, especially in local plitics and was active with government relations issues.
McMeekin always strived to have the green industry gain respect. He believed if someone joined the association that would be a first step in learning from others how to be a responsible business person. He was always working behind the scenes to help PLNA be a more effective organization.
"Tom was a mentor to the newest members of the green industry in the Pittsburgh area", said Dan Eichenlaub, president of Eichenlaub, Inc. and immediate past chairman of PLNA's board. "He used his years of experience to not only teach his son, who continues to operate McMeekin Nurseries today, but to help others, like me, succeed in th youth of their businesses so they could grow up and be strong."
