2013 PLNA Foundation Scholarship Recipients

Each scholastic award winner receives a certificate and cash award for the current academic year to be applied to tuition, books, or educational supplies. Congratulations to the 2013 PLNA Foundation Scholarship Recipients!

Tyler Anderson – Pennsylvania State University
Tyler is a 3rd year student in the Landscape Contracting program at Penn State, with the election of the Design/Build Option. He is currently the Vice President of the Horticulture club and eagerly strives to learn more each day and apply his knowledge for the bettterment of the club, his peers and the green community as a whole. Tyler has already earned a blasic level of certification from the R.I. Lampus Co. for Segmental Retaining Walls and has an intent to further his certification statuses to include NCMA, ICPI and PLNA certifications. Tyler plans to graduate in Spring 2014.

Deborah Bolger – Harrisburg Area Community College
Deb is a serious, dedicated, hard-working student in the Ornamental Horticulture program at HACC. She has excelled at the difficult tasks of handling work, family and college responsibilities. Deb has maintained a 4.0 in her Horticulture classes and is interested in the area of Horticulture Therapy. Deb’s employment history includes caring for patients with varying degrees of mental illness and first hand saw the benefits of therapies and treatment modalities. Her love of horticulture and gardening, and her pursuit of this degree can bring together her skills and knowledge to garden therapy programs. Deb plans to graduate in December 2013.

Theresa Cinque – Temple University Ambler
Theresa is pursuing her degree in the Horticulture program at Temple. She as earned credit certificates in both Horticultural Therapy and Landscape Plants and maintains a cumulative GPA of 4.0. Theresa is the Secretary for the Alpha Mu Chapter of Pi Alpha Xi, the National Honor Society for Horticulture and was inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society in 2011. She was an original member of the "Growing Native” volunteers at Pennypack Ecological Trust in Huntingdon Valley and has committed countless hours to the propagation, growth and care of native plants. Theresa plans to graduate in January 2014.

Curtis Chambers – The Williamson Free School
Curtis is in the Horticulture, Landscaping and Turf Management program at the Williamson Free School. In addition to his dedication to the Horticulture program, he also participates in Williamson’s Jazz Band, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was the Lacrosse Manager. Curtis has earned best-in-show and numerous ribbons for plants and produce. Curtis plans to graduate in Spring 2014.

Samuel Hanmer – Pennsylvania College of Technology
Sam is in the Landscape Technology program at Penn College. In addition to carrying a 4.0 in his major, he is an active horticulture club member and member of PLANET. Sam is also ICPI Certified. Sam is the quiet type but his work ethic speaks loud and clear as to his dedication to the industry. Sam plans to graduate in Spring 2013.

Alexandra Heigh – Delaware Valley College
Alexandra is pursuing her degree in Ornamental Horticulture and Environmental Design. In addition to her studies she is the Vice President of E.D.G.E – the Design Club on campus and works for the Delaware Valley College Arboretum. She is also an intern for the Precarious Alliance Symposium which is an interdisciplinary symposium which aims to bring together various arms of education, business and agriculture to discuss issues of sustainability and regeneration. Alexandra plans on graduating Spring 2014.

Denise Snook – Temple University – Ambler
Denise is a senior Horticulture major. In addition to carrying a 4.0 overall GPA, she is the student coordinator of the Temple/Philadelphia Zoo project which is a collaborative effort to plant/transplant over 500 native trees back into the ecosystem in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. She is also the President of Pi Alpha Xi, the honors fraternity for Horticulture students. Denise has received numerous awards over the course of her undergraduate work and has also had job experience in the industry including work at Primex Garden Centers. She currently works as a gardener in the Ambler Arboretum. Denise plans to graduate early in December 2013 and her goal is to attend graduate school with the ultimate goal of attaining a PhD in a plant related field.

Bradford Standen – The Williamson Free School
Brad is in the Horticulture, Landscaping and Turf Management program at the Williamson Free School. In addition to his dedication to the Horticulture program, he also participates in Williamson’s Baseball and Soccer teams. Last year he was the most inproved soccer player. Brad is one of the top leaders in his class, leads by example and has earned the respect of his fellow classmates. Brad plans to graduate in Spring 2014.

Jeremy Thorne – Pennsylvania College of Technology
Jeremy is in the Landscape/Horticulture Technology program at Penn College. In addition to carrying a 4.0 in his major, he is the President of the Hort Club on company, a Presidential Student Ambassador and the Vice President of Finance for the Student Government Association. Jeremy has also been Penn College student of the month and won many awards at PLANET Student Career Days including 1st place in Backhoe Operation and 3rd Place in Excavator Operation. Jeremy’s leadership skills have impacted the entire class at Penn College and they have become a stronger group of students because of it. Jeremy plans to graduate in Spring 2013.

Christopher Vertenten – Temple University Ambler
Christopher is pursuing a degree in the Horticulture program at Temple. For the past 4 years Christopher working in landscape restoration and residential gardening in Philadelphia and Bucks counties and this work compelled him to return to school for horticulture. He worked in in stream bank and meadow restoration and delveloped a passion for sustainability. He has assisted professors on original research in seed ecology and green roof media and has co-authored a research paper that is pending publication in Seed Science & Technology. His return to school and dedication has also resulted in maintaining Dean’s list since 2010. He is also a member of the Pi Alpha Xi National Honor Society for Horticulture. Christopher plans to graduate in Spring 2013 and hopes to attend graduate school for environmental science pursuing a career in natural resource damage assessment and environmental monitoring.
