Ernst Seeds and Fairview Evergreen Nurseries Host Successful PLNA MeetUp. Ernst Conservation Seeds and Fairview Evergreen Nurseries joined forces to provide landscape and nursery pros with an opportunity for education, camaraderie and tasty picnic fare at Ernst Seeds' headquarters in Meadville on Thursday, July 30th.

A group of about 25 began their evening at 5:00 with registration and networking before sitting down to a home-style pulled pork barbecue dinner at 5:30. According to Andy Ernst, vice president of Ernst Seeds, the good food and relaxed setting created a great atmosphere for interaction and networking among the guests:

"We were all enjoying the time together so well that it took us a little longer than planned to move on to Ruth's presentation," he said. "But the focus of a MeetUp is to network with our peers, so it was a good problem to have."

Ruth Benner of Penn State Cooperative Extension then presented "Pollinator Stewardship for Green Industry Professionals." Much of her discussion focused on the selection and use of pesticides, as well as some key related research findings relative to their effects on pollinators. One piece of information many found particularly interesting was the fact that certain combinations of chemicals found in some pesticide formulations can cause issues not seen when the individual active ingredients are applied independently.

Of particular interest to the nursery professionals in attendance was Ruth's update on the boxwood blight in Pennsylvania. She reported, among other things, that some resistant varieties of boxwood can still serve as carriers for the disease. Nurseries who have dealt with the blight previously need to remain diligent in their efforts to continually monitor and implement preventive measures to minimize the risk of further outbreak.

At the conclusion of Ruth's presentation, the air had cooled from the heat of the day and the group was able to enjoy a comfortable walking tour of Ernst Seeds' operations. Many were fascinated to learn of the countless unique methods and equipment used to harvest the hundreds of species of grass and wildflower seeds propagated on Ernst's 8,000-plus production acres. They saw grain bins with their unique system utilizing stratified layers of seed product, placed into the bins in the order they will be processed later. They viewed the many seed conditioning methods that help Ernst clean, sort, mix and package the seeds for storage and eventual shipment.

"The group was small and intimate, Ruth's presentation was excellent and the weather cooperated perfectly," said Andy afterward. "We appreciate the support of Fairview Evergreen Nurseries in helping us bring this MeetUp together, and for all the folks who took time out of their busy schedules to share in a great evening of learning and networking."

The last visitor left the Ernst farm as the sun set on a gorgeous western Pennsylvania summer day.

Another PLNA MeetUp that was a true vision of what a trade group looks like and some of what it does. PLNA is working with members to build this PLNA MeetUp program with the intent to help industry colleagues reconnect and reach out to new folks within the industry.
