2018 Fredrick J. Mummert
Distinguished Service Award

(awarded posthumously)

The Fredrick J. Mummert Award was awarded to Joanne Kostecky Petito (posthumously) at the PLNA Green Industry Forum on March 8, 2018.

Joanne started her business in 1983, Joanne Kostecky Garden Design in Allentown, PA where she was the creative force for over 30 years of award winning designs.  Joanne supported PLNA in a multitude of positions.  She has served on the Board of Directors, the Governance Review Board, the Executive Search Committee and the Awards Committee.  Joanne Kostecky Garden Design was one of the most winning businesses for the Excellence in Landscape Awards from PLNA, receiving over 80 awards.

In 2005 Joanne was the first woman to be awarded the PLNA Hall of Fame Award and in 2007, she followed that accomplishment as the first woman president of ANLA in its 140 year history.  She was also a founding member of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers and remained instrumental in developing their continuing education and certification programming.

Joanne sold her business in 2014 and ventured in a different direction with her career. But the green industry was still close to her heart and she figured out a way to stay close to the industry displaying her product at green industry trade shows.

Having missed working with people and their landscapes, desing and plants, in 2016 she formed a new company, House Scape Design Consulting, LLC, using her design expertise and experience to help do-it-yourself homeowners to create beautiful spaces both inside and out.

In March 2017, Joanne was honored with the distinguished Life Membership designation with PLNA, the final piece of the puzzle to qualify her for this Award. Joanne was diagnosed with cancer later that month. But she fought the disease with everything she had and through all the struggles continued to serve the industry and PLNA by volunteering on the Careers in Horticulture Task Force.

Sadly, Joanne passed away on November 3, 2017. Her contributions to the green industry in Pennsylvania and nationwide will be greatly missed. She was a great advocate and industry supporter. Joanne’s daughter, Jennifer McGuire, accepted the award on behalf of the family.
