Purple LoosestrifeHARRISBURG – The Controlled Plant and Noxious Weed Committee (CPNWC) of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) banned the distribution, cultivation or propagation of five species of plants at its October 24, 2019 meeting. The meeting took place at in Room 309 at the PDA headquarters building at 2301 North Cameron Street, Harrisburg. PLNA was represented on the CPNWC by PLNA alternate Gregg Robertson, as PLNA's regular CPNWC member Tom Tilley of Tilley’s Nursery in Coppersburg, Pa. was unable to attend.

The species banned were:

• Brazilian water weed (Egeria densa)

• Water soldier (Stratiotes aloides)

• Parrot feather (Myriophyllum aquaticum)

• Yellow floating heart (Nymphoides peltata)

• Wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) (except for non-wild cultivated varieties)

The three species that were tabled were:

• Phyllostachys aurea (Golden bamboo)

• Phyllostachys aureosulcata (Yellow groove bamboo)

• Phyllostachys bambusoides (Giant timber bamboo)

These species will be reconsidered at the January 23, 2020 meeting of the CPNWC. Gregg Robertson made a motion to table these three species due to a lack of scientific information on the invasive tendencies of the species presented at the meeting. The CPNWC then voted unanimously to table to species.

If you have concerns or comments about any of these species, please call (717.238.2033) or email Gregg Robertson at PLNA. You are also welcome to attend the January meeting and make your concerns known directly to the CPNWC. The meeting will be at 1:00 PM in Room 309, 2301 North Cameron Street, Harrisburg, Pa.
