Redding Agrees to Allow Alternates on Plant Committee

HARRISBURG – For the past two years, PLNA has been working with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture on an updated Noxious Weed Law. The new draft legislation is now called the Controlled Plant and Noxious Weed Law. (See PLNA e-news April 1, 2015.)

PDA released a ‘final draft” of the legislation in March, but there was still one issue outstanding that bothered PLNA: public members of the Controlled Plant Committee, which has the power to list plants as controlled or noxious, could not have alternates to take their place if they could not attend a meeting. PLNA no doubt will have a representative on the committee and it will be important for that person to have alternate if they cannot attend.

Dan Eichenlaub, the chair of PLNA’s Government Relations Committee, wrote a letter to PDA Secretary Russell Redding asking that the public members of the Committee be permitted to designate an alternate.

This week, PLNA received a reply from Redding agreeing that the draft legislation will be modified to allow public members of the Committee to designate an alternate.

PDA is currently working with legislators to determine how the legislation will be introduced and moved through the legislative process.
