Truck and TrailerHARRISBURG – PennDOT began implementing new federal CDL skill test requirements this past June 15. If you or your employees are prepping for the CDL, be sure that you have the new skills test materials. You can find the new test materials by clicking here.

Standard vs. Automatic Transmission Restriction

While it has not yet been implemented in Pennsylvania, be aware that the new federal regulations require that when you take your CDL skills test, whether you take it in a vehicle with a standard shift or an automatic transmission will matter. If you take the skills test in a standard shift transmission, you can also drive a vehicle with an automatic transmission. However, if you take the skills test in a vehicle with an automatic transmission, you will have your CDL license restricted to driving only automatic transmissions.

Current CDL Holders Grandfathered

This standard vs. automatic requirement has not yet been implemented in Pennsylvania since it requires a change in state law which has not yet happened. PLNA is monitoring this and will notify members through e-News when the new requirement takes effect. Anyone with a current CDL at the time this new requirement takes effect will be grandfathered to be able to operate both standard and automatic transmissions. So if you have been putting off getting your CDL, now would be the time to do it.
