Native Plant Resources

PLNA encourages the use of native plants and alternatives in the garden and landscape. Check out the links below for comprehensive native plant lists and resources for Pennsylvania and the region.

 

Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay

Native plants are part of the solution to achieving cleanup goals for the Chesapeake Bay. The Alliance has list of native plants that are “Bay Friendly” and their website allows you to search by your cultural requirements to come up with ideal plants for you specific yard and garden.

 

Ernst Conservation Seeds

If you are looking for a seed source for a larger-scale project, Ernst has mixes of both native and naturalized seeds for a variety of cultural requirements. Their website provides information about which types of plants play well together to achieve the conservation goals you are seeking. They also have a nifty website tool to help you plan your project.

 

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

Compiled by Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center the at Univ. Texas, Austin.  This is another great site that allows you to search by geographic location and cultural requirements.

 

National Wildlife Federation

This website is in beta release but is proving to be a very comprehensive database that allows searches for native plants by the specific cultural requirements you may be looking for. A great resource for doing a deep dive on native plants.

 

North Creek Nurseries

North Creek Nurseries in has one of the most comprehensive lists of herbaceous native plants and their cultural requirements for the mid-Atlantic region. Although they are a wholesale-only company, their website has great depth of information. Since North Creek grows these plants, you can find them in the trade at many local garden centers.

 

PA Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR)

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) has a wealth of information on plants native to Pennsylvania. Not only do they have lists of plants, but they go so far as to provide garden plans for native plant communities. There are lots more to explore on DCNR’s website than just the few links listed here.

 

PA Native Plant Society

If you are looking for more links to native plant resources on the web, the Pennsylvania Native Plant Society website can be helpful. You may also consider joining to take part n their educational programs and advocacy for native plants.

 

Penn State Extension

This link provides a basic list of native plants for your garden, but you can also follow up with your local Extension office and ask them to connect you to a Master Gardener in your area who can provide help as well. There is an Extension office in every Pennsylvania county.
